Mexican Fans in San Jose

Yes, Mexican soccer is quite popular in the Bay Area. There's no question about it. So popular that the Mexico U-23 national team's match against Australia on Sunday afternoon at the McAfee Coliseum in Oakland is already a sellout. The match will mark Mexico's return to McAfee Coliseum in a slightly more than a year when the full Mexican national team defeated Ecuador, 4-2, in front of a sold-out crowd of 47,416. The San Jose Earthquakes have hosted both of these matches and therfore must be quite aware of the popularity of Mexican players as well as the fact that Mexican fans turn out to see their teams play. So why haven't the Earthquakes leveraged this for themselves by bringing in one, two or even three Mexican players to be part of their new squad? I think they are trying to leverage this to some extent as shown by the fact they've scheduled the season opener against the Chicago Fire at McAfee Coliseum in Oakland which will feature the first visit of Blanco playing with the Fire. The stadium in Oakland will hold many mthree or four times as many fans than Buck Shaw Stadium obviously. The other two games currently scheduled to take place at the Oakland stadium are the two games when the Galaxy visit and bring the David Beckham touring roadshow to town and the Quakes obviously want to get the most attendance out of those games as well. Of course the salaries for many Mexican players are higher than what MLS teams can afford to pay. Also many Mexican players prefer to stay and play in their home league where they are comfortable. Lately the better ones are also heading over to Eurpoe to play for large salaries that European teams can pay. Several Mexican players are now playing for teams in top leagues across the pond. Marquez and Dos Santos are at Barcelona, Salcido is with PSV Eindhoven, Pardo is with Stuttgart and Vela is with Osasuna. These players are all on the current Mexican national team though. The Earthquakes could target younger unproven players that they could afford. The other option for the Earthquakes would be to use their designated player option to bring over someone in the prime of their career. This would likely need to be someone on the current national team in order to be successful marketing-wise. There are only so many Blancos around. Currently there are four Mexican players plying their trade in MLS. Dallas most recently picked up the latest one in Dulio Davino. Davino was signed not as a designated player, but also claimed that he was coming to play in MLS for the experience of playing abroad, not just for the money. Current MLS Players From Mexico Chicago - Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Forward Chivas - Francisco Mendoza, Midfielder Chivas - Claudio Suarez, Defender Dallas - Duilio Davino, Defender Francisco Mendoza started in the Chivas youth system and has developed into a solid starter the last few years in MLS. The other three, Blanco, Suarez and Duvino are all in their thirties and could be considered on the tail-end of their careers. Suarez, the oldest has been surprisingly very steady running the Chivas defense over the last two years and rarely gets burned defensively. He's announced this will likely be his final season playing. The important thing for the Earthquakes is to build a solid team, a winning team no matter where the players are from. I whole heartedly agree with this approach. It is the correct approach. However if you can do that and at the same time sprinkle in some Mexican players to draw the Mexican fans in it can be the best of both worlds. There have been Mexican players brought over to MLS in these attempts to cater to the Mexican fans, especially in the early years of MLS. The San Jose Clash obtained Missael Espinoza and he was a big hit with the local fans. In 1996 Espinoza had 10 goals, 5 assists in 26 games and was also the main attraction at the downtown Cinco de Mayo parade that year. Other Mexican players have been brought over with some success in attracting fans, the Galaxy have tried this most notably with the likes of Jorge Campos, Carlos Hermosillo and Luis Hernandez. Bottom line is if the Earthquakes could find an attacking player or two who are still young like Francisco Mendoza or a solid veteran who has earned the respect of Mexican fans over the years such as Dulio Davino it could spark interest from the Mexican fans in San Jose again. As long as the players can still play and make valuable contributions to the success of the team. It has to be in the name of building a quality, winning team instead of simply to cater to the Mexican fans. Only time will tell how the Earthquakes plan to leverage the popularity of Mexican players going forward. What are your thoughts? Who would you like to see if the Quakes brought over a Mexican player or two? Would it be successful?

O'Brien Trade Finalized

As previously rumored, Ronnie O'Brien moves from one expansion team to another for an undisclosed sum of money and the Quakes' top draft pick in 2009. The right midfielder passed a physical in the Bay Area on Wednesday and was expected to practice with the team today at Stanford. "He's not afraid to shoot, not afraid to take players on," Quakes General Manager John Doyle told the San Jose Mercury News. "He's an offensive player." http://www.mercurynews.com/earthquakesheadlines/ci_8385915?nclick_check=1

ROB spotted in SJ?

According to an update at Soccer Silicon Valley, Ronnie O'Brien was spotted here in town today at the Earthquakes offices in a meeting with Yallop and Doyle. Seems he's likely in town for a physical to check out the knee and so forth in order to finalize the deal. If it went well there should be an official announcement soon.

Ronnie O'Brien on his way to San Jose from TFC? [updated]

Rumor is that Ronnie O'Brien is leaving Toronto and may be on his way in a trade to San Jose. There is currently no news on what the Earthquakes would give up in return but O'Brien looks almost certain to join the expansion side as soon as Wednesday. O'Brien was described by Mo Johnston as 'the best right-sided player in the MLS' when he introduced him in Toronto one year ago but O'Brien suffered several injuries which limited his impact. It's very possible that O'Brien does not want to play on a turf field such as they have at BMO Field and that may be pushing this transaction. [Update] - Word is that the Quakes have not sent any players to TFC (Pozniak was thought to be outgoing) but the Quakes have given up some allocation money and next year's first round draft pick. Earthquakes 0, DC United 0 in SLO

In San Luis Obispo this afternoon the San Jose Earthquakes played DC United to a nil-nil draw. There wre a few raindrops and the field was not likely in optimal condition, but it didn't pour the whole game according to reports. The Quakes hit the post with a clear opportunity right before the final whistle with what would have been a game winner. A draw against United should give the Quakes some confidence to know that they are fairing pretty well against other MLS teams so far this preseason. The Quakes beat the Columbus Crew 2-1 on Friday. First Half Lineups: DC United: Zach Wells, Gonzalo Peralta, Marc Burch, Fred, Marcel Gallardo, Luciano Emilio, Devon McTavish, Gonzalo Martinez, Bryan Namoff, Dan Stratford, Jaime Moreno. Earthquakes 2, Crew 1 in SLO

Kei Kamara dazzled San Luis Obispo with a pair of goals to lead San Jose to a 2-1 win over Columbus in the first game of the MLS Central Coast Showcase Friday night at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. The Earthquakes got a pair of goals out of Kamara, one in each half, to notch its second win of the pre-season. Kamara, a native of Sierra Leone, was traded from Columbus to San Jose for Brian Carroll last November. Kamara kicked the scoring off in the 17th minuet. Gavin Glinton slid a pass on the ground through the defense on the right side to a streaking Kamara. The explosive striker then struck a low-lining shot past Columbus keeper Will Hesmer to put the Earthquakes ahead 1-0. The Crew would equalize in the 34th minute as San Jose’s Ryan Cochrane had trouble clearing a ball from the back for San Jose. The Crew took possession at the top of the box, swung the ball to the right and Alejandro Moreno directed a pass to Eddie Gaven. Gaven’s shot sailed low past San Jose keeper Dan Benton, who came on for Preston Burpo in the 22nd minute. Kamara again brought the crowd of 3,861 to its feet as he collected a ball with space on the left side of the box. Kamara faked one way, slid the ball back and rocketed a shot into the lower right corner of the net to give the Earthquakes a 2-1 lead. Columbus had their opportunity to equalize in the 62nd minute as Guilherme So fired a shot from 10-yards out, but Benton came off his line to block it. So tracked down the loose ball, bent a pass across the box and a San Jose defender headed the ball away. Frankie Hedjuk stepped into the cleared ball and boomed a shot, but Benton was up to the challenge. Scoring Summary: SJE – Kei Kamara (Gavin Glinton) 17 CC – Eddie Gaven (Alejandro Moreno) 34 SJE – Kei Kamara 54 First Half Lineups: Columbus Crew (4-4-2): Will Hesmer, Frankie Hedjuk, Chad Marshall, Andy Iro, Sandro de Silva, Eddie Gaven, Duncan Oughton, Stefani Miglioranzi, Robbie Rogers, Guillermo Schellotto, Alejandro Moreno. Dynamo Take the Earthquakes in Preseason Opener

The Houston Dynamo and the San Jose Earthquakes played their preseason opener today at PAL Stadium in San Jose. The Dynamo won the game 1-0 on a goal scored by Ricardo Clark, the goal came on a set piece from about 40 yards out. The ball was chipped over the wall, Chris Wondolowski was able to then knock it over to Clark who slammed it into the net in the 41st minute. Each team played their starters in the first half than mostly reserves in the second half. The game started out very sloppy for the Quakes, while they defended well they couldn't string any possession together. They improved as the game went on and eventually put together some scoring opportunities. Its games like this which they need to work the kinks out. Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop, on the game: “It was a good start for us. The guys put forth a good effort and we created some good chances to score, especially in the second half.” Yallop, on the team's play: “We have a solid core right now and we need to keep building. Players on Trial with the Earthquakes Currently

Chris Roner - Defender/Midfielder: Played his college ball at Cal Berkley. Was drafted by San Jose, Chris became part of the greatest comeback game in MLS history as he scored the series-tying goal in the final leg of the MLS Playoffs against the Los Angeles Galaxy on a header in 90th minute. The Quakes then went on to win the MLS Cup, despite Roner's own goal in the final. In 2004, Roner was placed on the injury list as he underwent a season-ending surgery on his right ankle. Eric Denton - Defender: Played his college ball at Santa Clara University. Was drafted by DC United, also played for Tampa Bay, Columbus, Colorado, NY Red Bulls. Matt Taylor - Forward: Played his college ball at UCLA. Was drafted by Kansas City with the 4th overall pick, he was picked up by Chivas USA in their expansion draft in 2004. Previously played in Denmark for Viborg FF, last season played for the California Victory in the USL.

Doyle Returns From Argentina

John Doyle has recently returned from Argentina where he was scouting potential players to bring to the new MLS team. Logic would dictate he was looking for attacking players. Doyle says the team wants to sign two players: both forwards, one of whom can also play wide right. What do you think? Is it too late in the process for the Quakes to sign some decent players? Will Doyle be able to reap any benefits from the trip. Only time will tell.

Goalkeeper Trying Out for Quakes

Quakes to Have First Practice/Game Back in SJ

Tuesday the SJ Earthquakes will have their first practice in San Jose at PAL Stadium. They have been holding their practices for the last week down in Carson at the Home Depot Center. On Wedenesday they will take on the Houston Dynamo in their first exhibition game of the season. I have a feeling this will be a much anticipated matchup for all Quakes fans. How do you expect this one to shake out? Both teams are very early in the preseason, the Dynamo though should be quite familiar with each other with most of their team returning. The Quakes are still trying to figure out how to fill the squad out. Who will be their international signings? Who will be their strikers? With the Earthquakes still working through the basics, it may very well be ahectic game for them, but we'll have to see how it goes.

Corrales Coming Back Home

Rumors have been flowing that former MetroStar and San Jose defender/midfielder Ramiro Corrales is headed back to MLS from Norwegian champion SK Brann. Corrales left MLS as a free agent following the 2004 season. His MLS rights are still held by Houston, which retains players who were under contract to the old San Jose team before it headed east. However, SoccerAmeirca is saying that sources have confirmed that San Jose and Houston have already worked out a deal to switch Corrales' rights to the new Earthquakes. Where do you think he fits in best on the Quakes? Who else does this knock out of the lineup? Do you like this rumored signing?
