The San Jose Earthquakes went into Bridgeview Illinois and earned a draw against the Chicago Fire on Saturday night. It wasn't a pretty game but the Quakes did stand up and play a decent game against the Fire. Jon Busch will have to thank his two favorite teammates, Crossbar and Post for helping him out in this game just like the first time these two teams met earlier in the season. Ramiro Corrales hit the post on a free kick in the second half and minutes later, Shea Salinas hit the left post. The rebound on Salinas' shot went right to Kamara and he took his time picking out his corner, but put it just wide left when he took it. Busch then let out a huge sigh of relief.
In the end the Quakes more than earned the draw with very good play from Ramiro Corrales who was all over the field making tackle after tackle in a physical affair that had a total of seven yellow cards between the two sides.
The Quakes will take the point from the draw in Chicago and head to their next game down in Carson to take on Chivas USA next Saturday.

Next Up For the Quakes, the Struggling Fire
So next Saturday, the Quakes head to Chicago for their third road game of this four game stretch on the road. They earned a draw in Slat Lake and a loss to DC in the first two affairs. The Fire however are struggling and will be glad to see the Quakes coming to town since they are badly in need of a win. Or will they? The Earthquakes gave them all they could handle in their previou match earlier this season back in Oakland. The Quakes probably should have had a draw or a win in that game, but were unlucky and could not finish them off, hitting the crossbar and the post as well as an open netter by Shea Salinas and that was all in the last minute of the match.
The Quakes will be without James Riley who was red carded in the 85th minute for a dangerous tackle. Perhaps Nick Garcia will be ready to return to the field after his knee injury though. Jason Hernandez should also be able to return to the field after being suspended for the DC United game. Kei Kamara may also be back from participating in qualifiers for Sierra Leone.
How do you see thie game playing out? WIll the Quake have a chance of getting a result in Chicago?

United Downs Quakes 3-1 in DC
United's Clyde Simms scored on a long shot in the 50th minute that hit two San Jose defenders before slowly rolling into the net past Joe Cannon. Just seconds later, United goalkeeper Zach Wells fumbled a cross from which John Cunliffe poked just over the line before Bryan Namoff's could clear it out of the goalmouth. Gonzalo Martinez scored a brilliant goal in the 55th minute to put United ahead. In the 88th minute, Emilio scored United's second goal off a deflected shot to cap the scoring at 3-1.
"We're chugging along and it's a shame really that we don't have more points than we have. We've played well a lot and not gotten anything out of the game so it's tough to take. I think the quality in the end showed with Emilio scoring -- he's a good player -- and a wonder goal by Martinez," said San Jose coach Frank Yallop.
"Our general play and all of the things we talk about coaching-wise and being structured is good, but talent-wise I think we are a little short right now. We've got three forwards who aren't even healthy right now which doesn't help," said Yallop.
"We are not playing a solid 90 minutes," said midfielder Ronnie O'Brien. "We are playing 50, 60 minutes and those other 30 minutes in games we are getting punished. We've got 30 minutes (a game) that we need to work on and keep our concentration and I think we will get some more results."
"It's just disappointing, especially when we are playing well, to get the right time to score and I think that's been our problem really. We don't look overly dangerous all the time when we are in front of goal," added Yallop.
"We need to be a little bit sharper in the final third and support each other better when we do have the ball," said Quakes forward Ryan Johnson, who was the only constant threat to United the entire match.
"I think if I knew that we could solve the problem straightaway," said O'Brien jokingly. "We're trying. Obviously there is a period of getting to know each other but we are not using the expansion tab as an excuse. We do feel we are a good enough team and we've been in every game. For the most part, we are not getting trounced on. Without two deflected goals today we've done all right. "I don't think you can ever question the effort," he continued. "Whether we have the quality or not, that's another thing, a different debate, but you can never question the commitment of the players. We went down to Salt Lake with 10 men and gave it all we got and got a result. We came out today and for the most part emptied the tank but didn't get the result in the end."

Quakes Gain Road Point from RSL
At Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake, Utah, the San Jose Earthquakes tied Real Salt Lake. With an attendance of 10,333 for the mid-week affair, the Quakes played down a man for the second half when Jason Hernandez received his second yellow card in the 44th minute. The Quakes had one shot on goal and Real had only 4 all night, so neither team created many opportunities.
Frank Yallop was happy to have picked up a point on the road, commenting, “It is good, but what it really does is not let Real Salt Lake get three points. Our division is as tight as anything, so on road games you don’t want to lose, a tie is fine. In home games in our division you want to get a win, so Real Salt Lake is probably disappointed, but it evens itself out. They just got a good result at Chivas USA and a tie here, so they are still unbeaten in two matches.”
The play of Ronnie O’Brien stood out for Yallop, “He was our man of the match. He was really good on both sides of the ball. Ronnie is back to his best and we are excited to have him. He is doing really well.”
The lineups:
San Jose Earthquakes -- Joe Cannon, James Riley, Jason Hernandez, Kelly Gray, Eric Denton, Ronnie O’Brien, Ramiro Corrales, Ned Grabavoy, Ivan Guerrero (Ryan Cochrane 51), John Cunliffe (Adam Smarte 61), Ryan Johnson.
Statistics: Shots 7; Shots on Goal 1; Saves 4; Fouls 20; Offsides 0; Corner Kicks 2.
Real Salt Lake – Nick Rimando, Tony Beltran, Nat Borchers, Jamison Olave, Chris Wingert, Matias Cordoba (Kenny Cutler 67), Dema Kovalenko, Javier Morales, Kyle Beckerman, Robbie Findley, Kenny Deuchar (Tino Nunez 57).
Statistics: Shots 24; Shots on Goal 4; Saves 1; Fouls 16; Offsides 2; Corner Kicks 7.

Huge Crowd Watches Beckham and Galaxy Come to Town
The San Jose Earthquakes could not keep up with the Galaxy on this night. With 39,872 in attendance, they created several very good chances but couldn't put them away while Edson Buddle scored a hat trick for the Galaxy, his second of the season.
The crowd showed up though at McAfee Colisuem to see the rebirth of the SJ-LA rivalry and to see David Beckham play here for his first time. Beckham received a big applause when he was announced in the starting lineup.
Adam Smarte played at right back for the suspended James Riley, otherwise the Quakes used the same lineup as last week. The Outback Steakhouse blimp flew overhead throughout the game. The Quakes pressured early but Buddle scored in the 6th minute to take the momentum away early. At half it was 1-0. In the second half it was the Quakes who again presssured the Galaxy early and seemed to be on the verge of tying it when BUddle stuck in his second and than his thrid of the night.
The Quakes deserved better than a 3-0 loss, but that's not what they got. They did play two players on the night who hadn't seen any time in games so far this season in Smarte and Roberts. They head out on a four game road streak and they need to get players back from international duty, get some players back from their injuries and than bring in some reinforcements in July through new signings. My prediction is that the second half of this season will be much better than the first half.
Quakes Lineup - Cannon, Smarte, Cochrane, Hernandez, Denton, O'Brien, Grabavoy, Gray, Corrales, Cunliffe, Johnson
Galaxy Lineup - Cronin, Klein, Franklin, Xavier, Randolph, Beckham, Pires, Tudela, Jazic, Allen, Buddle

Earthquakes Pick up 2nd Road Win of the Season
Ronnie O'Brien setup two goals, one from Ryan Johnson and the other from Ramiro Corrales which gave the San Jose Earthquakes a win against the Columbus Crew in Ohio, a 2-0 win at Crew Stadium.
Johnson headed home an O'Brien cross in the tenth minute of the game. It hasn't been often this season that the Quakes have been able to jump out to an early lead.
The Earthquakes doubled their lead sixty minutes in. John Cunliffe was foouled just outside the box on the right, and O'Brien picked out Corrales who hit a header past Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer.
Both teams lost players to red cards over a five-minute span, late in the second half, the Crew lost Brad Evans in the 8oth minute on a straight red when he fouled Kelley Gray. The Earthquakes lost James Riley in the 84th minute when he picked up his second yellow fouling Robbie Rogers.
The Crew pressed hard at the end of the game, but it was the Quakes day to take this game 2-0.

RSL Jumps on Quakes 3-1
San Jose Earthquakes lost to Real Salt Lake in Utah. They were outplayed in the second half of this affair and were outshot by RSL 15-7 overall. They just weren't aggressive enough. The attendance in Salt Lake City was 15,977.
San Jose Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop commented on what happened after the good start “We did well in the first half and came into halftime 0-0, which away from home is what you try to do. Obviously a goal would’ve been good but we didn’t even really look like scoring the first half. It’s just disappointing the goals that went in, the first one was a good goal, it was a good strike by Robbie Findley, the second one looked a little easy but I’d have to look at them on tape.”
The Quakes have not faired well on the field in Salt Lake this year, and play in Salt Lake City three times in a seven week span. Yallop added “I’m not in love with the field to be honest; it was a terrible game to watch. The first half was awful. It’s just tough for our players to come and play on it, that’s hard. We play them in a couple weeks and we better be ready for that one. We had the Open Cup and we conceded four goals and tonight three, so we need to make sure we’re ready for the next game.”
San Jose Earthquakes Midfielder Ramiro Corrales like the first half, but not the second half as well. On the Earthquakes’ performance, he said “I think we did a good job in the first half. We were very compact and did a good job, but I think we lost our shape a little bit in the second half and then they scored the first goal and it was pretty much over after that. It felt like we started dragging a little more after the first one, and then they got the second, and then the third, and it’s tough after that.”
