Ivan Guerrero Traded to DC United

DC United has announced that they have acquired Ivan Guerrero from the San Jose Earthquakes for a partial allocation. Guerrero is expected to be in D.C. shortly and may very well be available for Saturday's game against the Wizards.

Guerrero has seen time in 14 games (13 starts) this year after being picked up by San Jose in the 2007 Expansion Draft. He previously played three seasons for the Chicago Fire from 2005-06, making 74 appearances (71 starts) and notching three goals and 16 assists. Guerrero holds a green card and thus will not count towards United's international roster limit.

With the Quakes picking up Huckerby recently they likely feel that Guerrero would no be able to be fully utilized. Trading Guerrero for allocation money is a sign that further transactions such as the one for James and possibly Huggins could definitely be in the works.

What are your thoughts on the loss of Guerrero? Do you feel this is a good move for the Quakes?

Quakes Have to Wait for James

The Earthquakes may have to wait to get Marlon Alex James. He's under contract through the end of August and his team, Kedah is in the quarterfinals of the Super League playoffs.

San Jose Earthquakes Acquire Arturo Alvarez From FC Dallas

The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the team has acquired midfielder/forward Arturo Alvarez from FC Dallas in exchange for allocation money and a first round pick in the 2009 Major League Soccer SuperDraft.

“Arturo is a dynamic attacking player who should fit in well with our team,” said General Manager of Soccer Operations John Doyle. “He can play both in midfield and at forward so he also has great versatility, which is important for us as we continue to build our team.”

Alvarez, who was originally drafted by the Earthquakes in 2003, made 16 appearances with FC Dallas this season. He scored three goals and notched three assists. With FC Dallas from 2005-08, Alvarez recorded 11 goals and 11 assists in 86 appearances. He made a career-high 27 appearances last year, while scoring three goals and picking up three assists to help Dallas reach the playoffs.

While with FC Dallas, Alvarez scored the first goal in SuperLiga history in FC Dallas’ 1-1 tie with Chivas de Guadalajara on July 24, 2007. He also helped FC Dallas reach the 2007 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final. In the final, Alvarez scored one of the two goals for FC Dallas in their 3-2 loss to the Revolution.

Alvarez, 23, began his MLS career with the Earthquakes after being selected with the 13th overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft in 2003 straight out of high school. He made his debut on April 19, 2003 against the Kansas City Wizards becoming the youngest player ever to appear in a game for the Earthquakes. Making his first start on June 14, 2003 at Dallas, he scored the game-winning goal and notched an assist. He made 15 appearances in 2003 to help San Jose capture its second MLS Cup Championship. Alvarez played 11 games with the Quakes in 2004.

FC Dallas originally acquired Alvarez from San Jose in 2005 along with Richard Mulrooney and the Earthquakes sixth overall pick of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft in exchange for Brad Davis and the fourth overall pick in the SuperDraft.

“He has grown into a very good attacking player in this league and he was outstanding last season,” said Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop. “He is a great presence in the final third of the field, something that we have been lacking this year. It is exciting for the club to acquire a player of his caliber.”

Alvarez played 11 matches with the United States Under-20 National Team in 2004, scoring one goal and recording three assists. Prior to playing for the U.S. Under-20 team, Alvarez was the leading scorer for the Under-18 team with seven goals and one assist.

San Jose Earns Another Draw, This time to New York

The San Jose Earthquakes earned a draw against the visiting New York Red Bulls today at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara. The crowd of 9,046 was suriprised when an own goal by Eric Denton gave the Red Bulls the early 1-0 lead while the Quakes kept knocking on the door in the first half and had trouble putting one in until Scott Sealy turned and fired a shot from about 15 yards out. Former Earthquake John Conway made the save but couldn't hold on to the ball and Darren Huckerby tapped it in for his first goal for the team.

In the second half, the Quakes continued to pepper the goal with shots and crosses but couldn't find the net again try as they might. It ended in a draw, 1-1.

San Jose Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop felt good overall though “The first half was probably the best that we’ve played this year. We obviously gave them an early goal, but throughout the game, I never felt threatened even though they had, I think, one of the best players in the league on the field. Finishing is the thing that we are struggling with right now, but that will come.” On the team’s performance he added “Overall, our performance was excellent. We were tired because of the heat that came with having an afternoon game, but it is what it is, and to be honest, I thought we were very good. I felt really happy with the spirit and the togetherness and the creation of chances.” On the three new players, “(Francisco) Lima got back Friday night from Toronto and practiced on Saturday. He played great today and held his position well. Darren (Huckerby) was there until Thursday and also played great. I thought both guys played really well. With Scott (Sealy), the one header he normally buries he didn’t, but I think that once he gets into his spot, he will score goals because he can.”

Earthquakes defender Jason Hernandez, commented on the result, “We did a good job of coming out really aggressively, trying to press them and force them into mistakes in their own half. We put them under pressure and started off on the right foot. That part of our game plan was pretty successful.”

Earthquakes midfielder Darren Huckerby is getting to know his new teammates well, “I have been watching Scott, he tends to turn and shoot pretty early so I knew he was going to shoot, but I didn’t know if the goalkeeper was going to drop it or not. He dropped it and I don’t tend to score many tap-in, but it counts the same as a long shot, so I’m pretty pleased with it.” He also commented on the Ney York's back line, “They don’t tend to play much out of the back in England, so it’s a little bit different here, maybe you can catch the defense out a little bit. We created a lot of chances first half and we probably should have been two or three up.” And in regards to his thought on MLS so far "The competition is good. Everyone is very athletic. Everyone looks after themselves. Technically, it might not be as good here as in the UK. The Premier League is the best league in the world so that’s just one of those things. It’s difficult playing in the heat, so you have to be fit.”

New York Red Bulls head coach Juan Carlos Osorio feels the Earthquakes have really improved themselves with their recent acquisitions, “With the new signings, I think they are becoming a good team. Darren (Huckerby) is a huge threat because of his ability to come inside. I think (Francisco) Lima has a good left foot.”

Scoring Summary: NY -- Own Goal (Eric Denton) 4; SJ -- Darren Huckerby (unassisted) 13.

San Jose Confirms Kamara Trade

The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the team has acquired allocation money and a first round pick in the 2009 Major League Soccer SuperDraft from the Houston Dynamo in exchange for forward Kei Kamara.

“We would like to thank Kei for his contributions to the team this year,” said General Manager of Soccer Operations John Doyle. “This move gives us some flexibility for the future as we continue to build this team.”

Kamara appeared in 12 games in his first season with the Earthquakes, including 11 starts. The Sierra Leone native scored two goals this season.

Transaction: San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) – San Jose Earthquakes acquire allocation money and a first round pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft from the Houston Dynamo in exchange for F Kei Kamara.

Another Signing on the Way for Quakes?

Word is that Frank Yallop wants to bring in one more striker before the signing period is over.

They do have a new trialist in town currently, right winger, Englishman, Paul Brooker who formerly played for Leicester City, Reading and Brentford. Brooker, 31 years of age is 5' 8" and is looking for a new club.

Here's video of Brooker scoring for Brentford in April, 2006.

Kamara Possibly Traded to Houston

Word out of Houston, from Bernard Fallas is that the Earthquakes and Dynamo are close to finalizing a trade of Kei Kamara to Houston for a draft pick and allocation money. Officials from both teams are reportedly hammering out a deal while at Toronto for the All Star Game meetings.

Kamara, who has two goals in 12 appearances with the Quakes this season, would come with the benefit of his salary not counting toward the Dynamo's salary cap because of his status as a Generation Adidas player.

This move is interesting because it wouldn't clear salary cap room for the Quakes by removing his salary. It would provide allocation money though in return, but the Quakes have had plenty of allocation money all along this season, perhaps they used it all up in their recent transactions of Huckerby, Lima and Sealy. This move could also signal that Yallop and Doyle don't feel Kamara will be the player they need him to be in the near term and they aren't willing to wait for him to blossom. Lastly, with Huckerby, Sealy, Cunliffe and Johnson all capable of playing up front perhaps they feel he wouldn't get playing time and would rather move him now so they can make another player acquisition whenever they are ready to do so.

What do you think of this potential transaction? Do you like it?

Quakes Earn Another Road Draw, This Time at Toronto

At BMO Field in Toronto, Canada, the San Jose Earthquakes earned another road draw posting a shutout and at the same time being shutout themselves. This is a familiar result for Quakes fans this season. In front of 20,264, the Quakes didn't give up many opportunities and created even fewer themselves. But a road draw is a positive result that the team will gladly take at this time.

San Jose Assistant coach,m Ian Russell felt getting a point on the road was nice to have, "We got a point on the road although we were under pressure. We kind of held our own, got a point and that's good. Our defense has been good all year. We're hard to score against, but we just have a hard time scoring and hopefully we'll fix that. We've got some new players so it's got to help."

The Quakes played all three of their new signings including Darren Huckerby, Francisco Lima and Scott Sealy. Darren Huckerby has only had a few traning sessions with the Quakes since singing, commented on the TFC game, "Tough, it was tough. Three days training in two months so it's very hard to get into the game, but like I say the first one's out of the way now. I'm looking forward to getting back and start playing a few home games and we'll see how it goes."

Earthquakes Waive Vide

In order to make room on the senior roster due to the addition on new signing Darren Huckerby, the San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the team has waived midfielder Joe Vide. Vide appeared in five games this season for San Jose with two starts. He was originally drafted by the Earthquakes in the fifth round of the 2007 Major League Soccer Expansion Draft.

Earthquakes Trade for Sealy

The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the team has acquired Kansas City Wizards forward Scott Sealy. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Sealy was acquired in exchange for allocation money from the Wizards.

Sealy, 27, is in his fourth season in Major League Soccer this year, and he has scored 28 goals and notched five assists in 88 games in his career. This season, he has played 13 games and scored two goals for the Wizards.

“Scott is a proven goal scorer in this league,” said Doyle. “He has a good sense around the net and should immediately bolster our attack. He is an excellent addition to our team.”

As a rookie in 2005, Sealy burst onto the MLS scene with nine goals and two assists and was named a finalist for MLS Rookie of the Year. He led all rookies in goals that year after netting his first career goal against the Earthquakes on April 23, 2005. He appeared in 28 games that season. After netting a career-high 10 goals in 2006, he scored seven more goals in just 18 appearances in 2007. He started all three playoff games for Kansas City in 2007 as he helped them reach the Western Conference Championship game.

A native of Trinidad, Sealy has made 12 appearances for the Trinidad and Tobago National Team. He scored a goal in his first appearance in a Trinidad and Tobago uniform on June 20, 2004 against the Dominican Republic. Sealy also played in several World Cup qualifying matches in 2005.

Prior to joining MLS, Sealy was a standout forward for Wake Forest. He finished his career as Wake Forest’s second all-time leading goal scorer with 43 goals. Sealy was named All-Atlantic Coast Conference First Team along with being Offensive Player of the Year in his senior year. He played with fellow San Jose teammates James Riley and Amir Lowery at Wake Forest.

Quakes Announce Huckerby Signing

The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the team has signed English forward Darren Huckerby. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Huckerby signed with the Earthquakes after San Jose acquired his rights from Toronto FC in exchange for allocation money and an international player slot. He will be added to the roster pending the arrival of his ITC and approval of his visa.

“Darren should make an immediate impact on our team with his ability to go forward,” said General Manager of Soccer Operations John Doyle. “He can score goals and create goals, and he brings with him a wealth of experience in top leagues. We are excited to add a player of his experience and quality to our team.”

Huckerby, 32, joins the Earthquakes after spending the last five seasons with Norwich City, located in Northeastern English coastal county, Norfolk. A fan favorite for the Canaries from 2003-2008, he appeared in over 200 matches, scoring 32 goals. He netted a goal in his final game for Norwich City against Sheffield Wednesday in a 4-1 win in May. During Huckerby’s first season with Norwich from 2003-2004, he was crucial in the team’s promotion from League One to the English Premier League, the club’s first top flight status since 1995. He scored 14 goals that season. Huckerby was also voted Norwich player of the year by the club’s supporters for his performances during the 2004-2005 and 2006-2007 league seasons. He has been named to the club’s all-time Best XI.

“I have been a fan of Darren’s play in England for a number of years,” said Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop. “He has had a very impressive career over there and we are looking forward to bringing his exciting style of play here to the Earthquakes.”

The Nottingham native has also had spells with other English clubs, including Manchester City, where he appeared in 69 matches between 2000-2003, scoring 22 times. He helped Manchester City capture the Division One title in 2002.

Prior to playing for Manchester City, he played parts of two seasons for Leeds United, making 40 appearances in league play, while also appearing in six UEFA Cup matches. He scored three goals in all competitions.

The striker also spent time at Coventry City between 1996-1999, appearing in over 90 matches and scoring 28 goals for the team. He helped Coventry maintain a spot in the Premier League in 1996. He started his career in 1993 with Lincoln City, where he played until 1995, with 28 appearances, scoring five times.

Earthquakes Couldn't Hold Lead, Draw with Rapids

At Buck Shaw Stadium, the San Jose Earthquakes took a 1-0 lead early in the second half on a set piece from Corrales to Johnson. It was Johnson's thrid goal of the season. They continued to pressure the Rapids goal looking for more and overall had the better of play for most of the game, but they gave up a controversial Conor Casey header which tied it up. Frank Yallop believed there was a blatant push in the back from Casey on his Quakes defender while the shot was being taken by Casey and he let the referee know his feelings without a doubt. Once he was red carded he grabbed his suit jacket and tossed it and for extra measure gave it a swift kick as well in his disgust with the officiating.

After the game San Jose Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop had a few comments on the team’s performance “I thought we played better in the second half than in the first half. It’s frustrating because I thought our guys worked hard enough. I’m not sure if we should have won or not, but we were certainly in a position to win.” He feels strongly about the Quakes defense “We showed that we can shut a team down pretty well today. We limited their chances and Joe (Cannon) was not forced to make many saves. That was a positive today.”

Earthquakes Defender and Captain, Nick Garcia has hope the team is on the right track “Sometimes we’re bleeding more goals than we’re scoring. And for us, hopefully with the new signings, we’ll turn a corner and get better results.” He feels the team morale remains stable though “It’s been good. Of course it’s tough when you are not winning. We’re in a business where winning is mostly everything. And for us, getting a result is life. I think the morale is pretty good though.”

Earthquakes forward Ryan Johnson commented on his goal “I beat my defender to the ball, sometimes they are in front of you and sometimes they are not. It just depends on who wins the battle, and I won the battle this time. I tried to get my head to it before the ’keeper came out, I got a good piece of it and got it in the net.”

Quakes Signings Should Happen in Next Week

The San Jose Earthquakes are still in hot pursuit to sign three new players to the squad for the second half of the season. The transfer window opens July 15. Frank Yallop has commented that the Darren Huckerby possibility should be decided one way or the other in the next week. They are waiting to hear from Huckerby as to whether he will wign with Toronto or the Quakes. And they feel there is a decent chance he may very well decide to play here in San Jose.

Another player the Quakes still expect to sign is Brazilian, Francisco Lima but the deal isn't complete yet. Yallop said they are also pursuing a third player as well. Who that player is though he wouldn't identify at this time.

Earthquakes Lose Heartbreaker to Chivas USA

At Carson, California tonight, the San Jose Earthquakes played well in the second half and were unfortunate not to find the net after coming close numerous times. In the 88th minute, Ante Razov buried a free kick beyond the outstretched arms of Joe Cannon and took the win. The Quakes played a horrendous first half after doing well in the first 5 to 10 minutes. In the second half they finally came alive taking shots from distance and even getting several point blank shots that went just wide. But it wasn't good enough in the end for the Quakes to earn a draw or a win as they had to take the loss. They couldn't find their rhythm soon enough and they couldn't finish the chances they created. Corrales hit the right post on a long distance shot, later Chivas also hit the post in the slugfest.

The lineup for the Quakes:

Starting Lineup

* 1 - Joe Cannon (GK)
* 2 - Eric Denton
* 3 - Nick Garcia
* 4 - James Riley 89 out
* 7 - Ronnie O'Brien

Quakes Close to Signing Two Players

Reports are surfacing that the Earthquakes are very close to signing two foreign players. Reports from Toronto are saying that former Norwich forward, Darren Huckerby will sign soon with San Jose. This could be that Toronto couldn't fit him into their salary cap with all of the other signings they have recently made bringing players in this season. It could also be that Huckerby told them he wasn't willing to play on the turf at BMO field. This is the same reason Ronnie O'Brien wanted to go elsewhere from the Canadian team. Any players with concerns for their ankles and knees will be concerned about playing all home games on that surface.

The other signing the Earthquakes are apparently close to making is that of Brazilian midfielder, Francisco Lima. Lima last played for Brescia in Italy and prior to that for AS Roma.While Lima is 37 years old, he looks to be very fit and effective according to Quakes management that brought him in on trial.

Could there be other signings as well? According to John Doyle and Frank Yallop they are intent on signing three top quality players and there could even be more. One youngster the Quakes have tried out and been monitoring is another Brazilian, Pablo Campos who has been playing the last couple of years for the Fresno Fuego in the PDL. Campos is six foot three and has scored 14 goals and 2 assists in just 10 games.

The Earthquakes are looking to bolster the team with the July 15 signing window quickly approaching. They have been trying out players and evaluating who they feel would be the best fit for the team. While the quakes have struggled overall in the first half of the season they have played only 5 home games and 10 road games. I n the second half of the season they will have just the opposite, 10 home games and 5 road games and they feel once they add to their talent they will be able to win some games and make a push towards the playoffs.

Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.
